Climbing Wall

The Markin Family Recreation Center boasts a 46-foot rock climbing wall with a variety of different routes and ensuing levels of difficulty to reach the top. When Markin opened in 2008, this was the highest rock climbing wall in the state of Illinois.

Hours of Operation

  • Spring and Fall Semester Hours:
  • Monday – Friday:  4:00 PM to 10:00 PM
  • Saturday & Sunday:  2:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Summer Hours:

  • Monday & Thursday:  4:00 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Saturday: 2:00pm-4:00pm

(I) Climbing Wall

General info

The climbing wall has supervisors for climber safety, as well as to belay for any Markin center patron wishing to climb the wall, as well as to make sure the bouldering wall is being used safely. The climbing wall also has all gear needed to climb available for use for all Markin Center Patrons. This includes: Climbing shoes (sizes 6 and up), harnesses, chalk bags, bouldering pads, and belay devices.


Anyone who wants to use any of the climbing wall facilities must fill out a liability waiver, as well as listen to short orientation about the rules and safety guidelines.

Child policy

Any child under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, who must be present at all times while the child is climbing; this includes the bouldering wall.
