Tunnel of Oppression
The Tunnel of Oppression (TOO) is an interactive, tour guided event that highlights contemporary issues of oppression in a creative and realistic avenue. It is designed to introduce participants to the concepts of oppression, privilege, and power by guiding them through a series of "tunnels" or spaces designed by members of the designated identities.
Why should you sign up?
TOOwill benefit you by exposing you to the experiences of marginalized communities in an informative, interactive, and engaging way. Employers, graduate schools, and society as a whole has placed tremendous value in citizens who are culturally competent and aware. TOO will serve as an outstanding and educational opportunity for you to explore the importance and significance of differences, and how these differences impact you.
What is the format of TOO?
All participants who sign up for the tunnel will be placed in a group to tour through the event. Tours will every 20-25 minutes, and participants will have the opportunity to participant in a post-tour dialogue session for approximately 10 minutes.
How do I sign up?
If you want to experience Tunnel as a group (as a class, with friends, or as a student organization),register online.This electronic sign up system allows users to select the number of slots for a specific tour time. The limit is 25 students per tour. When signing up for a group please be sure to indicate the number of people that will go through the tour with your group at a specific time.
Do I have to sign up in advance to attend?
We highly encourage individuals to sign up for a tour time in advance to avoid spaces being filled when you arrive. However, you are free to come without signing up in advance, but keep in mind spaces may be filled.
What topics will be discussed in TOO?
While there are a great deal of pertinent topics related to the diversity, oppression, and society.
Volunteering for Tunnel of Oppression
- Actors - Responsible for acting out designated tunnel scene(s)
- Tour Guides-Responsible for guiding participants through the Tunnel throughout its duration
- Facilitator -Professional faculty/staff members only, responsible for leading post-tunnel discussion with participants
- Set up/Breakdown-Responsible for helping set up and tear down event
NOTE: All volunteer opportunities require attendance at a brief training session to discuss program expectations. Training dates will begin the week before the Tunnel.
