BRADLEY UNIVERSITY THEATRE PRESENTS CLYBOURNE PARK

Pulitzer Prize Script Revisits A Raisin in the Sun.

Feb 27-Mar 2 and Mar 6-9, 2014
by Bruce Norris

Clybourne Park, Bruce Norris’s acclaimed, Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy and sequel to the Lorraine Hansberry stage classic, A Raisin in the Sun, will begin its Central Illinois premiere at Bradley University Theatre’s Hartman Center for the Performing Arts on February 27. The New York Times has called the play “vital, sharp-witted, and ferociously smart!”

Act One: It’s 1959, and a middle-aged couple, much to the alarm of their neighbors in the all-white community of Clybourne Park have sold their modest home to an African American family—the Youngers, of the Hansberry play. Act Two: Fifty years later, the now-abandoned house occupies prime real estate in a gentrifying all-black neighborhood; and another white couple has bought it with plans to raze and rebuild- a development one of the Youngers’ descendants aims to stop.

With savage humor and compelling insight, playwright Norris skillfully weaves one family’s haunting secret with another’s legacy of aspiration, linking generations and challenging the notion that we live in a “post-racial” America.

Directed by distinguished guest artist and former Western Illinois University professor, Dr. Egla Hassan, CLYBOURNE PARK will run Thursdays through Saturdays February 27-March 1 and March 6-8 at 8 PM, with Sunday matinees March 2 and 9 at 2:30 PM. Tickets are $14 for adults, $7 for students, and $12  for Bradley faculty and staff/students/seniors. For tickets call 309-677-2650
