Caterpillar Professor of Flute and Music History, Dr. Kyle Dzapo, began another prestigious endeavor when she recently signed a contract with Oxford University Press for a new scholarly book, “Flute Music in Context: A Guide to the Repertoire.”
The book will provide historical and analytical information for 40 of the best-known pieces in the flute repertoire, including compositions by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Hindemith, Nielsen, and Jolivet. Research and writing are planned to take three years with actual publication requiring another year. The release is scheduled for 2015.
The concept for the book came from Dr. Dzapo’s work as a pre-concert lecturer for the Chicago Symphony. “In that capacity, I provide contextual information for pieces the audience is about to hear,” she said. “My idea for this book arose from that work. It is intended for flute students, teachers, and professional flutists; it’s important that they have a resource that provides in-depth contextual information for the works they perform.”
Oxford University Press is linked to Oxford University and is the oldest and largest continuously operating university press in the world. Its objective is to publish works that reflect excellence in research, scholarship, and education. The first book to be printed in Oxford – the “Commentary on the Apostles’ Creed” – was printed in 1478, only two years after Caxton set up the first printing press in England, following the invention of the printing press by Johann Gutenberg in 1450. Operations in the United States began in 1896, one year before the founding of Bradley University.
Dr. Dzapo began writing the sample chapters during her sabbatical leave, Spring 2010. Last summer, she submitted a formal proposal and sample chapters, which she admitted was an extensive procedure.
“It’s a long process, involving internal and external reviews and approval by editors, the board of delegates, and the editorial board. All of that has now been completed. I have a fabulous editor and am very happy to be working with such a renowned publishing company.”
