Although senior civil engineering major Jeff Reckamp is aware he’s developing leadership skills through his involvement with Bradley’s fan group the Red Sea, they aren’t his favorite perk. “My favorite part of the Red Sea? Being at games and getting to go crazy.”

Reckamp is one of hundreds of students who belong to the Red Sea, the student fan group responsible for the screaming, red-clad student body that attends every BU athletic event. In addition to the thrill of being an ardent fan, Red Sea members receive season tickets to men’s basketball home games and gear including from t-shirts and lanyards; they also attend viewing parties for distant athletic events and earn points for attending home games. Red Sea fans are also invited to an end of year party where they redeem their attendance points for prizes.

Reckamp, who is the President of the Red Sea, said he chose BU after attending an overnight visit. “I knew I wanted to go to a school within a few hours from home, with a good engineering program. My school had an awesome student section, so I was used to a lot of student involvement at athletic events,” he said. After participating in the enthusiastic student section at men’s basketball games, the Athletic Department approached Reckamp and other students to gauge interest in forming the Red Sea.

As president, Reckamp meets with the other students and Athletics Department representatives monthly to brainstorm. He and other Red Sea members update their site as well as a Facebook page where upcoming athletic events and pictures are posted.

Reckamp says he is looking forward to the men’s basketball season in particular. Bradley is ranked fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference, and will play the 2010 National Champion Duke Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium on December 8th.

Another season highlight is the contest between conference rival Illinois State University, to be held on Wednesday, January 26th at Carver Arena. “The best attended event is always the game verses ISU,” Reckamp said.

The Red Sea is promoted at Freshman Orientation, and membership forms are available at the Activities Fair. For more information, visit www.bradleyredsea.com.
