2019 Inclement Weather Policy

RE:         Inclement Weather

 

Please read the following as it relates to campus closings or class cancellation.  Class cancellations do not necessarily mean the University is closed. 

It is important to distinguish between class cancellations and any University closing because of the significant student residential population on campus and the necessary associated life and safety support systems provided to students by our campus.  Thus when these rare events occur, the President and Provost in consultation with appropriate administrative offices, will make the decision regarding a class cancellation, University closing, delayed opening or early closing.  

When classes are canceled or the University closes, opens late or closes early, the University will distribute the message in a number of ways including text messages, web alerts, email and local news media. Employees may call 677-4000 for updates during severe weather conditions.  Faculty and staff are encouraged to register for emergency text messaging at http://emergency.bradley.edu/ (see the “sign up” link in the column on left).

Without a formal class cancellation, University closing, delayed opening or early closing, any employee who is absent from the campus during periods of inclement weather or other event affecting University operations is required to use vacation, or in the case of bi-weekly employees, vacation or personal time.  Supervisors DO NOT have the discretion to release employees from work schedules. If the University closes employees scheduled to work will be paid for the time the University is closed.  Employees who are not scheduled to work, those who have scheduled vacation or a personal day will not receive “snow day” pay.  The same guidelines apply should the University close for a partial day.  All shifts may not be affected. Conditions will be monitored on an ongoing basis throughout the day and the University will reopen when deemed appropriate.  

Inaccurate reporting of hours worked or approval of incorrect information on a bi-weekly time and attendance sheet is a violation of University policy and federal wage and hour guidelines.  Administrators and supervisors are responsible for ensuring this policy is consistently enforced across campus.  Please contact the Human Resource Department at Ext. 3223 if you have any questions.
