Illinois Saxophone Quintet To Perform February 21

The Illinois Saxophone Quintet will appear Sunday, February 21 at 3 p.m. in a free concert in the Dingeldine Music Center, located at 1417 W. Barker Avenue, on the Bradley University campus.

This concert will mark the first performance of Zimmerman’s transcriptions of the J. S. Bach Little Fugue in G for organ and the first movement of Mozart’s K. 515 Quintet. Also featured are former ISQ member John Redshaw’s transcription of A Chloris by Renaldo Hahn; the Brown Brothers Russian Rag; a not so traditional setting of Amazing Grace that incorporates both the chorale and a gospel approach; the third movement of Johannes Brahm’s Quintet, op. 88 set by Robert Sibbing as well as his original work for five saxophones, Aria; Poldini’s Dancing Doll; and other works from various mediums.

The quintet now is made up of Zimmerman and four of his former students. Zimmerman, soprano saxophonist and leader of the group, holds two degrees from Illinois Wesleyan and two from the French national conservatory system as a French Ministry of Culture scholarship student of Daniel Deffayet. He also studied with concert saxophone pioneer Cecil Leeson at Ball State University and Paul Brodie in Toronto, Canada. He is a long-time artist /clinician for Selmer Paris saxophones and has been lead saxophone for many years with the Pekin Park District summer professional concert band.

The other members of the quintet are Dan Young of Dunlap; Corey Burns, alto saxophonist; Matthew Winkler, tenor saxophonist from Metamora; Russell Zehr, baritone sax.
