Bradley University Police Department Awards Ceremony

The Bradley University Police Department (BUPD) recently held an awards ceremony to recognize the officers, employees, student employees, and citizens who keep the Bradley community safe.

BUPD Chief Brian Joschko says the awards ceremony is an opportunity to publicly acknowledge and to thank everyone for their actions. "The ceremony not only recognizes the contributions of the very talented staff but also acknowledges those community members who positively impacted our community by stepping forward and becoming involved. Only together we can make Bradley University safer."

Among the recognitions were citizen commendations. These are presented to someone who is not a member of the department but who has materially aided the department or its officers in some way. Gregory Brooks and Daniel Walker received commendations for their efforts on October 19, 2017. They were driving down the street when they heard the witnesses yell, saw the male suspect running with a stolen purse, and stopped the suspect.

The Meritorious Service Award went to Lt. John Michael Domenighini, Sgt. Nicholas McCumber, Officer Darmon Swanson and Officer Theresa McConnell-Hill. On the night of November 26, 2017, Sergeant McCumber initiated a vehicle stop on a vehicle as it drove the wrong way down a one way street adjacent to campus. The suspects fled from the vehicle. Lieutenant Domenighini, Officer Swanson, and Officer McConnell-Hill responded to the area and set up a perimeter to contain the fleeing suspects. Lieutenant Domenighini located the suspects as they hid on campus and took them into custody with the assistance of Officer Swanson and Officer McConnell-Hill. An investigation revealed the vehicle was indeed stolen and also identified a third suspect who was not in the vehicle on that night. One suspect and the identified third suspect were charged with motor vehicle theft, residential burglary and were extradited to Madison County, IL for home invasion charges.

Other recognitions from the ceremony included:
BUPD Student Employee of the Year: Junior Nicole Baran, awarded posthumously
Community Partner Award: Lamda Chi Alpha
Officer of the Year: Officer Kaleb Campbell
