Students Raise Sexual Assault Awareness

April 5, 2016

Bradley University students have launched a month long campaign to highlight Sexual Assault Awareness.  They have organized several programs this month aimed at shedding more light on this topic that impacts the entire campus.

Organizations involved include Student Senate, HEAT, Bradley Wellness Program, Athletics, Student Activities, Student Services, Fraternity & Sorority Life, and ResLife.

They are handing out teal ribbons to the campus community at various events asking them to wear the ribbons to raise awareness. In support, some student athletes will be wearing these ribbons at upcoming athletic contests and the Bradley University Police Department officers, office personnel and dispatchers will wear them during the day-shift through April 30. Police Chief Brian Joschko says his office is proud to support the student senate campaign to bring more awareness to the issue of sexual assault. "Sexual assault remains one of the most pervasive crimes on college campuses today and continues to garner national attention. It's important that we all work together to shed light on this issue that impacts everyone on our campus."

At the recent Late Night BU event, more than 100 students decorated pillowcases for the Clothesline Project, a program that addresses the issue of violence against women. Those pillowcases will be hung together on a clothesline providing a powerful visual testimonial to the problem of sexual violence in our society.

Each week during the month of April there will be a different theme of sexual assault awareness including Consent, Bystander Awareness, Women's Empowerment, and Reporting Options.
