How Japanese Culture and the Geopolitics of East Asia Impact Our World

The Asia Pacific region has become increasingly important in world affairs and it is likely to become increasingly more significant for various reasons. So we are asking the questions: How are Japanese relations with North Korea, South Korea, and the post-Trump United States? And, what is Japan's perception of a nuclear North Korea?

The Peoria Area World Affairs Council will present, “Japanese Culture and the Geopolitics of East Asia,” with Aaron Hoover on Thursday, January 25. The presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. in room 116 of Westlake Hall on the Bradley University Campus.

The current political climate in the region appears to be turbulent, but perhaps we can use an alternative perspective to understand current events. In particular, what is the Japanese perspective? Hoover will provide a lecture on the sociocultural themes present in Japan, both historically and currently, followed by an open discussion about current events in East Asia.

Hoover is a Bradley University alumnus (’14) who majored in international and religious studies and minored in Asian studies. After graduation, he moved to Japan for work and study. His previous research experience relates to religion and culture in contemporary Japan, as well as contemporary international relations concerning Japan and China. He will begin graduate work in East Asian studies next fall.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
