“Quirky Connections: Peoria to St. Petersburg” Recital Is September 27

Flutist Kyle Dzapo and pianist Tatiana Shustova will present “Quirky Connections: Peoria to St. Petersburg,” a recital of works for flute and piano, on Tuesday, September 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dingeldine Music Center, located at 1417 W. Barker Ave, Peoria. The event is free and open to the public.

The program will include works by Tchaikovsky, Copland, and Joachim Andersen with illustrated commentary to highlight connections between the compositions, locales, and performers. Dzapo will present two works of Danish flutist, composer, and conductor Joachim Andersen. Opening the recital with one of his famously difficult solo etudes, she will then perform Concertstück, Op. 3, with Dr. Shustova in a new edition, which Dzapo prepared for Andersen’s original publisher, Zimmermann of Frankfurt. Shustova will perform Tchaikovsky’s colorful Romantic masterpiece Dumka (Scenes from a Russian Village), Op. 59, and the two will conclude the program with Aaron Copland’s last large-scale work, the Duo for Flute and Piano.

Kyle Dzapo is the Caterpillar Professor of Music and Director of the Honors Program at Bradley University. She also is a pre-concert lecturer for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and author of a new book, Notes for Flutists: A Guide to the Repertoire (Oxford University Press, 2016).

Tatiana Shustova is an award-winning pianist from Saint Petersburg, Russia, and a graduate of the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory. She has appeared at music festivals in the U. S., Italy, Greece, France, and Finland, and was awarded First Prize in the 2012 American Protégé International Romantic Music Competition, which led to her debut recital at Carnegie Hall.
