Bradley’s Visual Voices Lecture Series Welcomes Award-Winning Artist Mary Anne Arntzen

As part of the Visual Voices Lecture series, Bradley University Galleries are pleased to welcome award-winning artist Mary Anne Arntzen to discuss her Overshot series Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. at Horowitz Auditorium. A reception will be held at Heuser Art Gallery following the lecture, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Based in Baltimore, Arntzen is the recipient of the Bethesda Painting Prize and Maryland State Arts Council’s Individual Artist award in painting. She has been reviewed in the Baltimore City paper and served for several years on the advisory committee for ICA Baltimore. She is a Design Patent Examiner for the U.S. Department of Commerce in addition to her successful art practice.

“Mary Anne’s campus visit will give invaluable exposure to students and members of the community who will gain a deeper understanding of her story as a working artist residing outside of this region,” said Susanne Nestory, Department of Art and Design gallery coordinator. 

Overshot is a series of oil paintings that reference a technique where two patterns are woven simultaneously. The artist explained, “My visual vocabulary borrows from architecture, textiles and cartoons. Thickly painted impasto, transparent glazes, immediate brushstrokes and slow build-ups of marks coexist on each canvas.” Arntzen will be discussing her technique and visual references that inform her art.

Overshot will be on display at Heuser Art Gallery through Dec. 1. The lecture and reception are open to the public.
