Biography

Edward Flint started his chemical career at Kenyon College, where he studied lead and manganese chemistry with Professor Gordon Johnson. He then moved on to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he studied sonoluminescence, light emitted from solutions that are subjected to high-intensity ultrasound, with Professor Ken Suslick. After a postdoctoral stay in Tübingen, Germany with Professor Harald Suhr studying laser-induced chemical vapor deposition and a year teaching Chemistry at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, he came to Bradley University in 1992.

Teaching

Edward teaches courses and labs in general, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry. Courses he is currently teaching include:

  • General Chemistry I and II and associated laboratory courses
  • Advanced Inorganic Chemistry and lab
  • Analytical Chemistry laboratory
  • Chemistry and Civilization
  • Chemical Group Theory

Scholarship

Dr. Flint studies a wide range of chemical topics, including the chemical effects of ultrasound, coordination polymers, microscale analytical chemistry, chemical vapor deposition, X-Ray crystallography, and group theory. Two current areas of research are highlighted below.

Synthesis and Characterization of Doped TiO2 films and powders.

We synthesize doped TiO2 powders by a variety of procedures, including hydrolysis, chemical vapor deposition, and ultrasonic irradiation of chemical precursors. We then, in collaboration with the Department of Physics at Bradley University and others, characterize the powders and films we have made. Students have presented this work at the annual Bradley Research Expo and at Local meetings of scientific societies.

Synthesis and Characterization of Coordination Polymers

Coordination polymers are materials made with both inorganic and organic components that self-organize into crystalline structures as a consequence of the coordination chemistry of the metal ions that are used. Examples of 1D, 2D, and 3D structures have been made, and work is ongoing to characterize these materials.. Students have presented this work at the annual Bradley Research Expo and at Local meetings of scientific societies.
