Summer Orientation Placement Exam

Students who studied a foreign language in high school or at another college or university and who wish to continue studying the same language at Bradley University must take a placement test before enrolling in a language course. If you have no experience in a language, you do not need to take the placement exam for that language. Students must register for coursework at the level of placement or higher in order to receive credit for language coursework. Students must complete WL 201 (third semester) in order to qualify for the B. A. degree (see Undergraduate Catalog for details).

Students who test at the 202 level or above are required to complete only one course at that level to qualify for the B. A. With the consent of the instructor, students may elect to take a course at a higher level than the indicated placement level. Native and near native speakers of languages offered by the department are placed individually on the basis of the level of language competence in their native language.

Placement Tests

Summer Orientation students who are interested in taking a World Language and Cultures course in the fall will need to take a placement test and speak with someone from the department before they can register for fall classes.

  • Students ready to take the assessment may do so by clicking on the “Placement Exam” red box at the bottom of this page. This will direct you to the “Create Account” page where you will need to enter a password to create an account. You will need to enter your six digit ID number which you should have received in your admission materials. If you are uncertain of this, please contact your admission counselor or contact Undergraduate Admission at admissions@fsmail.bradley.edu.
  • You will be directed to the “Sign In” page where you will sign in to take the online test in Chinese, French, or Spanish.
  • Please allow yourself 30 minutes to take the test.
  • Prior to taking the placement test, you will be asked to provide information about yourself and your previous foreign language study. Please fill out completely.
  • When the assessment has been completed, you will be able to view your score. The department office will then submit your placement level information to the Registrar’s Office which allows registration.
  • Your placement score does not give you course credit; it only indicates the level at which you should begin your studies.
  • It is never to your advantage to begin at the 101 level if you are more advanced in your studies – you will simply have to take more courses to fulfill your language requirement.
  • The 101 course is primarily for those students who have never taken the language before.
  • If you are having difficulty at any point please contact the Department of World Languages and Cultures at ahertich@bradley.edu. Good luck!
