Herzlich Willkommen, meine Damen und Herren, zum Website Deutsch!
The German language is considered the first language of over 150 million persons worldwide. Since the English language is considered by linguists to be a member of the Germanic language family, students at the elementary level find the German language relatively easy to learn and to master. By the end of the third year of study, students are able to read, write, speak, and understand the German language with a high degree of competence.
Knowledge of the German language brings with it innumerable advantages:
first, and possibly foremost, learning the German language is very
enjoyable, given the relative ease associated with mastering the
language within a relatively short period of time. Also, many Germans
consider Germany to be a nation of "Dichter" (poets) and
"Denker" (intellectuals), with a rich tradition of cultural
achievements in such varied areas as architecture, film, literature,
music, and science; consequently, mastery of the language is a first
line of access to fully understanding and appreciating these achievements.
Germany also has a rich mythology and tradition of folk songs and dance to which students thoroughly enjoy exposure. Also, given its status as one of the major industrial powers throughout the world and most especially within the European Community, occupational opportunities abound for Americans who have mastery of the German language. Most of our German language students at Bradley elect study abroad through one of our partner programs in either Vienna, Heidelberg, or Dresden. As the Germans are fond of saying, "Deutschland, Oesterreich, und die Schweiz sind eine Reise wert." (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are worth the trip.) We hope to receive postcards from you as you sail along the Rhine River, ski the mountains of the Alps, or stand in wonder before the Cologne Cathedral. Tschuess, und alles Gute.
