About
The IT Service Desk is the main point of contact for all services offered by Bradley University’s Division of Information Technology. We support all students, faculty, staff and guests of the University.
Our mission is to recommend, provide and maintain quality information technology systems and services that enrich Bradley’s teaching and learning environment as well as the administrative functions of the University. We are committed to the effectiveness of its support services, the development of its staff, and the reliability of its systems.
New Students
There are a number of things that can be performed by you prior to coming to campus. By completing these tasks, your first couple of days will be more enjoyable and your family will rest easy knowing that these issues have been taken care of before you return home.
Activate Your Account
An activation letter has been sent to you and contains your BUnetID (username) and an activation code (PIN). The BUnetID identifies you to Bradley’s network and permits you to access registration for orientation, course registration and technology resources located throughout campus.
Get detailed information pertaining to your BUnetID account and keeping it secure.
Check Your E-Mail (B-Mail)
The student electronic mail system is hosted by Google© and accounts are created by and affiliated with Bradley University. B-Mail is the official method of University communication with students. You are responsible for all official correspondence received via your B-Mail account. It is strongly suggested that you check this account regularly.
To access your electronic mail account go to http://mail.bradley.edu and enter in your BUnetID and password that you created from the activation letter. Your mailing address is: [email protected] Example: Elton John’s B-Mail address: [email protected]

Password Reset Tool
Register your cell phone number to our self-service Password Reset Tool in order to receive a password reset PIN code by SMS text if you forget your password and the answers to your security questions. A valid BUnetID and mobile carrier capable of receiving SMS messages are required. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
Get Started in Learn
Navigate to learn.bradley.edu in order to get started using Bradley’s learning management system. Learn will be your hub for course content and delivery, has a mobile app for on the go notifications and access, and built in Help and Training should you have any questions.
Computer/Device Registration
All devices which are to connect to the university’s wired network must be registered. This includes Smart TVs, gaming consoles, laptops, desktops, etc. This process is done once you arrive on campus.
Granting Third Party Access
MyBradley provides students with fingertip access to information pertaining to their academics. It also provides the ability to create an account so that parents are able to access billing information, class schedule, grades, holds and the current address on file with the university. The student is the only one who is able to grant permissions for this type of access. To see a demonstration of how to grant third party access view the video tutorial below. Once access has been granted, the third party can view information.
What To Bring
Most students bring their own computer to campus. Please see the Student Laptop Recommendations for systems that have a history of performing well for students in our campus environment. Some academic programs have specific computer requirements, so check the Recommendations page for your program.
Bradley Campus Computer Sales has partnered with Dell, Apple and ThinkEDU, providing educational discounts. Visit our website for recommendations, helpful information and links to purchase your computer and discounted software (85% off on software!) online.
Bring the media that came with your computer in the event that your operating system or software should need to be reinstalled. Bradley is unable to provide software for your personally-owned computer.
- We recommend purchasing an HDMI and an ethernet adapter for tablets, MacBook Pro Retina models or any other laptop that does not have built in ethernet. You will need to be able to connect to Bradley’s wired network for taking quizzes and tests.
- Bring an external hard drive or flash drives to back up your data in case of spyware/malware or virus infections. While most of these can be removed they have been known to damage files which are then non-recoverable.
- Bradley recommends that you bring an ethernet cable for each device capable of connecting to the wired network.
If you do not bring a laptop to campus, there is a public lab is available for your use in the Cullom-Davis Library. The Library also checks out laptops to students for use within the Library. Windows and Apple desktops, printing, scanning, and other services are available within the Library as well.
List of Devices Prohibited from Bradley University Network
The following list of IoT (Internet of Things) devices has been prohibited from being used on the Bradley University wireless or wired networks. Many of these devices do not have proper security protocols or are not compatible with the security protocols being used on the Bradley networks. They may also require the use of specific ports or services that have been explicitly blocked by the network firewall.
The following devices are known to fall into the category of prohibited devices:
- Wireless printers (should be connected via USB cable only or WiFi-Direct connection)
- Smart bulbs (Philips Hue, LIFX, Wyze, etc.)
- Google Chromecast and Google Home line of devices:
- Chromecast/Chromecast Ultra
- Home
- Home Mini
- Hub
- Lovebox (https://en.lovebox.love/)
- Any other “casting” device that requires a smartphone for operation
Peer-to-peer
File sharing is not encouraged on the University network. Having file or print sharing on may enable others to access your system without your knowledge and if it interferes with the university network you will be quarantined (denied network access). The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) reports any copyright violations to the university. Students who are reported will have their network access blocked until they have proven to no longer be in violation. Repeated offenses may result in network access being denied for an entire semester.
Library Computer Access
In the event that your computer becomes unusable, the Cullom-Davis Library can loan out Windows and Mac Laptops for 6 hours from the Reserves Desk. Additionally, there are a number of computers located in the Computer Lab near the Service Desk that are set up for student use.
Websites
Use caution when going to non-familiar websites as these may have spyware/malware or viruses attached to them that install automatically on your system without your knowledge.
B-Mail
Electronic messages received from persons unknown to you should be deleted. Bradley University The Division of Information Technology will never ask for your BUnetID and password in an electronic mail message. These are phishing messages trying to get your information to use for illicit purposes.
Caution should always be used when opening an attachment, especially from someone you do not know. This is one of the major ways viruses, spyware and malware get onto a person’s system.
Service Desk Move In Day Hours
The Service Desk, in the Cullom-Davis Library, will be open Saturday, August 20 from 10 AM – 5 PM and Sunday, August 21 from 12 PM – 5 PM to assist with computer questions and connection issues. Phone support is available at (309) 677-2964.
Network Set Up And Registration
BUSecure does not require registration.
Wireless is provided in the dorms, personally-owned wireless routers are not permitted.
Wired network registrations expire at the end of the school year. If your computer or device has not already been registered this year:
- Connect to the wired network using your Ethernet cable. If you forget your cable, you can purchase one at the Bookstore or other retailer.
- After connecting to the network, launch your browser, you will be directed to the on-line registration program; if you do not automatically arrive at the registration site (NetReg), type the following in your browser’s address bar: http://netreg.bradley.edu.
- You will need to know your BUnetID and password to complete this process;
- Follow all instructions to register your computer on the network and then restart your computer after 30 minutes to ensure it is connected to the network
- If you have any issues after restarting the computer, please call the Service Desk at (309) 677-2964.
BUsecure (WiFi)
BUsecure is the WiFi network that should be utilized for most devices. If you are having trouble connecting to BUsecure or staying connected to BUsecure, please follow these guidelines.
- Only connect to BUsecure while on campus. If your device tries to connect to BUguest, BUother, or BUsponsored, forget the network in your device’s settings.
- Your BUnetID password expires every 90 days. You will receive reminders in your Bmail inbox to change it through MyBU. If it expires, you won’t be able to connect to the Wi-Fi until you update it.
I already have anti-virus software on my computer. Do I have to install the software provided by Bradley?
You can use any anti-virus software, provided that updates remain current.
Can I wait until move-in weekend to “secure” my computer?
We recommend that you set up your computer prior to move-in weekend. When you connect your computer up to our network and the security steps are not performed, you may be susceptible to viruses and spyware and may not meet the requirements to register your computer on our network. You will also save a lot of time by performing the steps at home.
What will happen if I don’t follow the Bradley Security Recommendations?
If inappropriate network activity is observed by our Network Engineers, your computer may be placed in Quarantine and you will be required to perform all of the security measures and have it verified at the HelpDesk prior to obtaining access to the network. Please read our Malware Policy for more information.
What is the cost for using the network?
There is no charge to access the network in the Residence Halls.
If my computer “crashes“ while I am at Bradley, can someone fix it for me?
The Service Desk provides level one support for student owned computers. However, hands-on support such as hardware repair is limited.

Bradley Email
B-Mail is the official method of University communications for all students. B-Mail is a Google-based (Gmail) program.
- When you activate your BUnetID, you will automatically be set up with your B-Mail account
- Your B-Mail address will be [email protected] and your password will be your BUnetID password
- Access your B-Mail account through any Web browser
- Change your BUnetID (B-Mail) password on MyBU (login to MyBU, use the password change channel)
Note: Be aware that sending email to fellow students at [email protected] instead of [email protected] will result in a failure to deliver that message.
You are responsible for all official correspondence received via your B-Mail account. It is strongly suggested that you check your Bradley University B-Mail account on a regular basis.
FSMail and Google Apps for Education are Google based programs and are the official method of University communication for all faculty and staff. This mail system is called FSMail (Faculty and Staff Mail) and accessed by entering fsmail.bradley.edu in the location bar of any web browser. Two of the major benefits for this system is the large mail storage space per user and the ease for sharing documents.
Contact, Privacy, and Security Information about Google Apps for Education (GAE)
BUnetID
At Bradley University, your BUnetID is your user name that uniquely identifies you to campus systems. Your BUnetID provides access to network resources such as electronic mail, MyBradley, MyBU and more. Your BUnetID is usually the first letter of your first name and your last name (i.e. Jimmy Jones’ BUnetID may be jjones).
BUnetID Account Creation
A new student BUnetID is created automatically during the admissions process and distributed via Slate. A new employee BUnetID is also auto created once the employee has a verified start date entered in the Human Resources database. This is auto activated during new employee orientation. If you do not know what your BUNetID is or have other questions, contact the Service Desk at (309) 677-2964 for assistance.
Password Changes or Reset
Passwords are set to expire every 365 days. To change your password, follow the instructions on our password change web app.
Know the answers to your secret questions, but don’t remember your password? You can answer those questions on the password reset page to create a new password.
Forgot your password and the answers to your secret questions and you do not have a registered phone in your possession – come to the Service Desk during business hours. A Bradley ID or government issued photo ID is required.
What do I do if I cannot remember my password?
When you initially set up your password, you should have selected some secret questions and provided answers to them. Provide your BUnetID and answer the questions to reset your password. If you have registered your cell phone number with us, you can reset your password using a code sent to your phone. https://password.bradley.edu/loginmanagement/reset
If you do not remember your password and do not know the answers to your secret questions:
- On Campus: Go to the Service Desk on the first floor of the Library with your government-issued photo ID and complete a Request for EIA/BUnetID letter to reset your password and set up your secret questions.
- Off Campus: If you cannot come to campus to complete the request, you can call the Service Desk and a letter can be sent to your address of record.
- If you need assistance or do not know your BUnetID, contact the Service Desk at (309) 677-2964.
What are the requirements and guidelines for passwords?
We have removed the mixed letter and number complexity requirement and increasing the password expiration interval to 365 days. We are able to do this by checking new passwords against a list of passwords that have been exposed in known data breaches. You can try the new complexity requirements and read the FAQ on the password checker page.
Changing your password while on campus while connected to the network via an Ethernet cable is the recommended method. Changing your password while connected to systems that require authentication (particularly secure wireless) can lead to complications. If you are connected while changing your password, your wireless network connection may cease to function due to the fact that your login credentials have changed. We recommend that Windows users log out and back into their machines immediately after changing their passwords.
What is Bradley University Signin Service?
Bradley University Signin Service is a login service that allows you to access multiple password-protected web systems (such as B-Mail and Sakai) after logging in once on a central authentication server. You will be automatically redirected to the signin service login screen when you access one of the supported systems, unless you have already authenticated during your session. If you are done using a web system and log out, you will be taken to the signin service screen where you can go back to the web system you were using without having to enter your credentials again, or you can click the link to fully log out of the authentication service.
Is there a way to see when my password will expire?
Yes, by going to the Change Password app. Here you will see your BUnetID password status which shows last changed date and expiration date. You can change your password at any time. You will also receive an email notification that your password will soon expire every day for seven days prior to your password expiration.
I received an email asking for my BUnetID or account name and password. What should I do?
The only email request that you will receive from Bradley email administrators will be a notification that your BUnetID password is about to expire, and you will be provided with instructions to change it. If you have responded to any requests for your password, you should log in to MyBU immediately and change it, or contact the Service Desk at (309) 677-2964 for assistance.
I am using mail clients (not a web browser such as Chrome) on a desktop, a laptop and a smart phone to check my email. What should I keep in mind?
If you have more than one device with your BUnetID and password set up to check email or to use BUsecure and you change your password, it is possible that one of the other devices will continue to attempt to connect using your previous password. Please be aware when changing your password of any other devices including mobile devices that you commonly use and change the password on those as well. Most applications will prompt you for this new password when this happens.
I am faculty and have changed my password now I am back on campus and I can’t log in. What do I do?
Access the network via a wired connection on the laptop, this enables the laptop to update the information to what has been changed on the network.
I changed my password and my wireless connection from Mac OS X did not ask me for my new password and I cannot connect. How can I enter my new password?
Open the Utilities folder on your computer. Under the Keychains list in the top left corner, click on login. Next, click on the Passwords option in the Category list in the left hand menu. This will give you a list of all the passwords that the Keychain app has stored on your computer. Find the BUsecure keychain in the list and double click on it to open it. Check the Show Password box on the lower left hand side. The Keychain app will ask you to input computer’s password and then click the Allow button. Delete your old password and put in your new one in the Password field. Be sure to Uncheck the Show Password box before closing the Keychain app. You can now connect to BUsecure with your new password stored.
I am going to be away from campus for some time. What should I know?
If you think your password will expire while you’re away, it’s probably better to change it before you leave. However, beware of changing it RIGHT before you leave. If you change it a week or so ahead of time, this may help you remember your new password.
It is not a bad idea to change your password a few days before you leave campus. This will give you time to become accustomed to the new one and possibly avoid password expiration while you are away.
I am using VPN from off campus. What should I keep in mind?
If you are using a VPN client with Windows to connect from off campus and change your password, the cached password on the laptop or desktop does not change.
After changing your password, press CTRL-ALT-DEL if you are using Windows, to lock the computer, then unlock the computer with your new password. This will enable you to stay connected and will change the cached credentials.

University Networks
A secure wireless network is one that uses encryption to secure communications. Sending sensitive information over the Internet from a secured wireless network provides added security to that information. No network security option is failsafe. Be sure to continue to follow basic precautions when using the secure wireless network.
Prior to attempting to connect to BUsecure, apply all software updates for your operating system or device.
Who Should Use BUsecure?
It is strongly recommended that all students, faculty and staff take advantage of the encryption security provided by Bradley’s secure wireless network. BUsecure requires logon (authentication) using the BUnetID and password of the person connecting to the wireless. The connection is fully encrypted.

The Bradley Wireless Network provides wireless connectivity to all areas of campus including all residence halls and many off campus residential areas (fraternities and sororities).
What’s the difference between BUsecure and BUguest?
BUsecure
- Requires a BUnetID and Password for access
- All communications are fully encrypted over the wireless network
- Provides access to anything available from a wired connection
- SSID is broadcast to simplify connecting
- Connectivity time is unlimited
BUguest
- Requires only an email address for access
- Provides no encryption. Only traffic using a secure encrypted web page are encrypted
- Is very limited in the type of access allowed
- SSID is broadcast to simplify connecting
- Connectivity time is limited, requiring reconnection
Which network (BUsecure or BUguest) should you use?
All members of the Bradley community should use BUsecure if possible. Only devices that cannot support the required security protocols or people who do not have a BUnetID, should use BUguest. BUsecure provides a reliable, safer and more robust method of communication.
Can I just use my own wireless router in my room?
No. The wireless network is engineered to provide full and robust coverage in all areas of the residence halls. This is also true for St James and many of the fraternities and sororities. Adding personally owned access points to your living area interferes with the radio frequencies of the access points. You can use personal routers to provide additional wired outlets, but you should turn off the wireless portion of your router. For help disabling the wireless in your personal router, call or visit the Service Desk.
What else causes interference with the wireless network?
Many types of devices can cause radio frequency interference with the Bradley network.
- Wireless printers: Many printers today offer a wireless option. These are primarily a convenience for you, but will cause interference and poor performance of the wireless network. Use a USB cord to do your printing and your other wireless access will work much better. Turn off the wireless radio on your printer! You may need to install a special driver on your machine to manage your printer. For help with printer configuration, call or visit the Service Desk.
- Game consoles: If your game console provides a wired option, turn off the wireless option and plug in your console. If yours does not offer a wired option, please work with the Help Desk to assure that yours is properly configured to avoid conflicting with the Bradley wireless.
- Other devices: Many other devices, like microwave ovens and wireless telephones can cause interference. Be aware of the effect the use of these devices has on your wireless service.
- Walls and enclosures: Walls and other enclosures interfere with radio frequency transmission. We work to adjust for the walls themselves but other enclosures may effect your performance.
- Ad hoc – PC to PC wireless:
Can I use the wireless network for Sakai?
Yes, although we strongly suggest that you only use BUsecure. In addition, test taking in Sakai depends on a continuous, uninterrupted connection to avoid problems. With that in mind you should NEVER use a wireless connection for testing.
How can I get the best network performance from my computer?
The highest speed, most reliable connection will always be from a wired connection. If you need high bandwidth connectivity, with low latency and reliable transmissions, plug into the provided wired port in your room.
When you plug in your computer, turn off the wireless radio. This helps you avoid any internal confusion in your machine about which connection it should use.
Large numbers of people in a small area using wireless connections can run into performance issues. If you are connected but your throughput is low, move to a less congested area.
I have a problem with the wireless network in my room. What should I do?
Please start by trying to identify whether the problem is with your computer or with the network by troubleshooting with with the following:
- Does your computer work at other locations on campus, like the Library?
- If you move from your room to someplace in the hallway, or in a common area, does it work properly?
- What does the signal strength indicator on your computer tell you?
- Do you successfully connect to the network but then drop your connection? Or, are you unable to connect?
- If you are trying to connect using a phone, try turning off the cellular data usage in the phone’s settings.
After you have the answers to these questions, you can go to the Service Desk or call (309) 677-2964 for help.
I am having trouble getting BUsecure configured on my device and I get a message about certificates. What should I do?
If your your device prompts you to accept a certificate when trying to connect to BUsecure, click the allow button. Some computers may ask for a password before it will accept the certificate. This will be your computers password, not your BUnetID password.
Securing the network against intruders continues to be a challenge both on and off campus. Network registration is the process of placing your computer into the firewall zone appropriate for your level of responsibility. To provide complete security, it is required that all computers connected to the campus wired network must be registered on the network. If your computer was purchased and installed through Bradley University’s Campus Computer Sales, the registration process will be completed for you. You may be asked to register your computer occasionally in order to provide asset management information.
Employee systems are placed in the highest security level, the “working” zone of the firewall. Computer labs and public use computers and printers will be placed in the “learning” zone, with access appropriate for the academic environment.
Bradley University offers wireless networking for students, faculty, staff and guests. Wireless networking is by nature a shared medium, and inherently less secure than traditional wired networking. If you need high speed connectivity and high capacity a wired connection is recommended.
All users of the Bradley University network must conform to the policies indicated in the IRT Acceptable Network Usage Policy. Upon connecting to the network, you agree to adhere to additional standards. Violation of any of these standards may result in your immediate disconnection from network services.
