Sophomore Sports Communication major Rebekah VonPlinsky’s career options opened up in droves as she embarked on an internship with Chicago Fire FC.
Though holding true to her professor Dr. Joshua Dickhaus’s early advice to enlist in as many internship experiences as possible, VonPlinsky was unsure of her odds as a then first-year student. “I decided to apply just to see if it was possible,” she explained.
As the first game approached with no word, she accepted the silent rejection. But, she soon discovered they had the wrong email on file, which had prevented the good news from reaching her. After sorting out the miscommunication, everything worked out—she had the internship. “A few days later, I was heading to Chicago,” she said.
During her time with Chicago Fire FC, VonPlinsky’s duties varied from day to day. Some games she was a photography marshall, others she did stats or transcribed interviews. “I was able to experience multiple positions, which I am very thankful for,” VonPlinsky explained. “It kept me on my toes every game.”
However, one part of her internship experience became a fast favorite.
“I was most excited about going to the post-game interviews and hearing what the coaches and players had to say about the game right after it ended,” she said. “It was so surreal to be right there in the moment and hear from them after giving their all out on the field.”
Inspired by all the behind-the-scenes action, VonPlinsky went from wanting to enter broadcasting to considering a career in fan engagement or public relations. “The opportunity to intern with Chicago Fire FC helped me realize there are endless possibilities with the Sports Communication degree, and I am so happy I chose this major.”
Flexing her networking muscles, one of the connections VonPlinsky made through the internship was with Carlos Rodriguez, Sporting Communications Specialist for Chicago Fire FC. “At the last game, Carlos told me I could shadow him next time I’m in Chicago,” she said.
Looking ahead, she’s excited about the coming opportunities. “I would love to intern with the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Blues next. Until then, I’m going to focus on my studies.”
