Resurgence in Indigenous Literatures: Reframing Our Critical Lenses (Peoria Reads 2026)

September 25 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Join Professor Kel Sassi of Northern Michigan University in a critical exploration of reading and discussing Indigenous Literatures during the current resurgence in publications by Native authors as part of our collaboration with Peoria Reads, a 25-year citywide reading initiative alongside Peoria Public Library.

Learn how traditional literary theories often fall short in supporting readers of Indigenous literature and how Indigenous approaches like Archibald’s Indigenous Storywork and Simpson’s inclusive re-telling of traditional stories give a fuller appreciation of Indigenous literatures.

This Visiting Scholar is sponsored by the Intellectual and Cultural Activities Committee and the Peoria Public Library.
