Cullom-Davis Library - Bradley University

The Reserves Desk is to the left of the library entrance. Reserves are the course-related materials instructors provide for student reference. All reserves materials must adhere to established copyright law. The Reserves Desk also offers a selection of cables, charging cords, and other electronics (i.e. headphones, webcams) for use in the library.

How to Borrow Reserves Materials

You must have a valid Bradley ID to use the reserves materials.
Use the library catalog to locate the desired item.
Give your Quick Card to the Reserves Desk student. They will charge the item to you based on its reserve type.

Reserves Types

The professor establishes the reserve type for each item. Reserves materials cannot be renewed and must be returned when due to avoid fines.

4-HOUR CLOSED: You may use these items for four hours within the library.
1-DAY: You may check these materials out of the library. They are due at the same time the next day.

How to Return Materials

Please return materials on time so they are available for all class members to use.
Return all reserves items to the Reserves Desk or after hours in the outside drop slot by the front entrance.
Items returned elsewhere may result in fines if they are overdue when they reach the Reserves Desk.

Fines

4-hour Reserves	$15.00 per hour fine.	Maximum fine –$30.00.
1-day Reserves	$15.00 per hour fine.	Maximum fine –$30.00

Borrowing privileges will be suspended if you owe $5.00 or more in overdue charges.

What Can I Place on Reserve?

The reserves collection includes library books and instructors’ personal copies, past tests, answer keys, sample student papers and videos. Library reference materials, periodicals and books borrowed on interlibrary loan may not be placed on reserve.

How Do I Place an Item on Reserve?

Only faculty members may place materials on reserve.
Check the library catalog to see if the items you’d like are in our library collection. If so, fill out a Reserves Request Form. Email the completed form to the email address indicated on the form, or bring it to the Reserves Desk.
Bring or send personal materials to the Reserves Desk with a signed Reserves Request Form.
Contact your liaison librarian about purchasing items/books not owned by the library. Materials obtained from other libraries through interlibrary loan cannot be placed on reserve.
Please allow five (5) working days for the processing of materials.
Copies of the Reserves Request Form are also available at the Reserves Desk.

Copyright Information

Under the Copyright Act of 1978, the library does not make photocopies for reserves use; it does accept personal or departmental copies of books and articles for a maximum of one semester. These materials must bear a notice of permission granted (or applied for) in compliance with copyright legislation Title 17, U.S. Code.

By signing the Reserves Request Form, the requestor accepts responsibility to comply with the copyright law. The following considerations apply:

Single photocopies may be made from a library-owned publication if the library’s copy is unavailable or in deteriorating condition.
Single photocopies may be made for the personal use of a faculty member.
Multiple copies must meet the test of BREVITY* and of SPONTANEITY.**
Copies of copyrighted material may not be used for more than a single term without special permission from the copyright owner.

Specifically PROHIBITED practices:

Copying to create, replace or substitute for anthologies, compilations or collective works
Copying of consumable materials like workbooks, exercises, standardized tests, etc.
Copying to substitute for the purchase of books, periodicals or publishers’ reprints
Copying directed by higher authority
Repeated copying of the same item for the same instructor from term to term

The library will stamp photocopies placed on reserves with the notice of copyright.

* Brevity: Articles not to exceed 2,500 words or portions of a monograph not to exceed 1,000 words or 10% of the work (whichever is less).

** Spontaneity: The decision to use a copyrighted work in such a way that there is no reasonable way a request for permission could be granted because of lack of time.

How Long Can Materials Stay on Reserve?

Items are kept on reserve for one semester only.
Personal materials are returned at the end of the semester; library-owned materials are sent back into the circulating collection.
You may return materials to Reserves for another semester with a new Reserves Request Form.

Document Delivery

Document Delivery allows Bradley students, faculty and staff to request electronic copies of articles from library-owned print magazines and journals.

Delivery of Books

For books from the Cullom-Davis Library or from I-Share libraries, you can request delivery to your office right from the catalog. Please Allow 1-2 business days from the time of request for delivery to your office.

Delivery of Scanned Articles

Document Delivery can provide electronic copies of articles from print magazines and journals, as well as microfilm, owned by Cullom-Davis Library. To use Document Delivery, you must be registered in our database as Bradley faculty or staff.

The title of the journal, author of the article, volume, date, and inclusive page numbers.

To order articles from journals not owned by Cullom-Davis Library, please use ILLiad/Interlibrary Loan.

Laptop Checkout

Laptop computers are available for four-hour checkout for students to use within the library building. Show your Bradley ID at the Laptop Desk on the first floor to pick up equipment.

Microsoft Office is installed on all laptops, and internet access is available via the BU Secure wireless network. Students may print by sending jobs to the campus printing system.

Library Instruction

Librarians can instruct students in strategies for finding, evaluating, and using the most appropriate information sources for their coursework.

Evaluating Wikipedia and its place in research
Evaluating the relevance and reliability of information critically

Email sprints (hosted in Canvas by inviting a librarian)
Visit the library as a class for one or multiple class sessions
Consult librarians outside of class time
Embed a librarian in your Canvas course to troubleshoot research questions
Explore videos, tutorials, exercises, and other asynchronous tools for learning
Collaborate with a librarian to design research assignments

Room Reservations

To reserve a study room in the library, go to Library Room Reservations.

When you arrive for your room reservation, stop at the check-out desk to sign out the key.

how to use the reservations systems

A maximum of four (4) people can be accommodated in each study room on the 1st and 2nd floors.
A maximum of two (2) people can be in the Quiet Study Rooms in the basement.
You can have up to four hours (240 minutes) per reservation, with a maximum of one (1) reservation each day.
Your reservation can be extended at the checkout desk if the room is still available.
You may reserve a room up to seven (7) days in advance.
You can make a total of seven (7) reservations per week.
Room Reservations will be held for 15 minutes after the start time. If there is demand for rooms, unclaimed reservations will be canceled after 15 minutes.
Study room reservations are for Bradley University students, faculty and staff.

Groups of Bradley students wishing to use larger rooms 121, the Wyckoff Room, and 215 may reserve them by asking at the checkout desk OR using the Meeting Room Category in the Room Booking page.

Bradley Faculty wishing to reserve larger rooms for group functions or meetings may call the library office at 309-677-2850 to make a reservation.

Faculty Publishing Party

Starting in 2023, the library hosts a Faculty Publishing Party each spring. This is a reception for faculty and staff to celebrate the publications and other scholarly and creative work of Bradley’s faculty from the previous calendar year.

Criteria for scholarly/creative items are defined as follows:

Book (whole book, includes edited).
Book Item (chapter, article in a proceedings, story, encyclopedia entry, report, etc.).
Periodical Item (print/online journal, newspaper article, poem, short story, etc.).
Other Type Item (score, sound recording, DVD/video, software, juried art, etc.)

Submit your publications or other scholarly/creative work using this Google Form.

The 2025 Faculty Publishing Party will be held on Thursday, April 17, 1 – 3 p.m. in the Library’s Wyckoff Room. RSVP Here (requested, not required).

The Breathing Room

The Breathing Room is located in room 103 of the Cullom-Davis Library. It is a space for mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness – a place to “take a breath.”

Guidelines for use

The space is available on a first-come, first-served basis
To use, ask for the key from check out desk (have your Bradley ID ready)
Use for up to 30 minutes at a time
Single occupancy
Use the white noise machine, observe silence, and/or use headphones
Return the room to its original condition after use
For Bradley students, faculty, and staff only
Space should only be used for intended purposes
