Congratulations to the winners of the Douglass L. Alligood Award for excellence in advertising campaigns. The winners of this prize include senior advertising majors Sarah Campos, Chloe Igiametse, Kathryn Lyne, Crystal Vining and Tracey Wong.

For the award, students studying with  Department of Communications Associate Professor Dr. Stephen Banning’s class needed to work with a local company to enhance its advertising in the Peoria-area. The group chose to team up with Ribbon Records, a local vintage store located in the heart of the city.

The store sells vinyl records, vintage clothing and furniture. The students, whose team name is The Ribbonettes, wanted to approach the project in a different way.

“We wanted to use both traditional and non-traditional media,” Lyne said. “ Ribbon Records is a very laid back and stylish store. We wanted to give them our very best.”

The Ribbonettes put more than 100 hours worth of work into the project and competed against five other groups. Their book consisted of a media plan, creative plan, situation analysis and much more.

“We worked really well together,” Campos explained. “It was a very complicated book to assemble and it was nice knowing you could trust your group members.

The Doug Alligood Award was created in 2011 in honor of Douglass Alligood ’56, a Slane College alumnus and one of the first black executives in the advertising industry. Alligood is currently the senior vice president of Horizontal Markets at BBDO New York and received the ADCOLOR Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.

The award consists of a cash reward and a trip to New York to meet with Doug Alligood at BBDO New York. The group will leave May 5 and return on May 7.
