Beta Alpha Psi team heads to national competition

Five accounting majors won first place in the Best Practices competition at the Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) Midwest Regional meeting. The team will move on in August to compete in the Best Practices finals at the BAP annual convention in Anaheim, Calif.

The team was made up of seniors Michael Costello, Anthony Isherwood and Amy Mentgen and juniors Kristina Korwin and Amy Zimmermann. Their presentation was titled “Professional Social Networking” and described a three-step program that the chapter implemented to improve their members’ ability to use LinkedIn for professional networking.

The students competed against seven other schools including the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University, and Northern Illinois University. This is the third time in four years that a team from Bradley has qualified for the Best Practices national finals.

The Best Practices competition is one of the many events sponsored by BAP. During the past year, the chapter hosted about 20 professional meetings. The speakers addressed a diverse range of topics such as transitioning from school to the working world or passing the CPA exam. Additionally, the chapter sponsored about 10 community service events such as preparing food boxes at Midwest Food Bank or tutoring students taking introductory accounting classes.

Founded in 1919, BAP is the international honorary organization for accounting majors. There are now 300 chapters on college and university campuses with over 300,000 members initiated since BAP’s formation. BAP is available only to students enrolled in business schools accredited by AACSB International — the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
