Crossing Borders Collective, a Chicago-based multi-cultural classical music ensemble, will present “Beyond the Headlines: Haiti in Music,” a concert of string quartets by Haitian composers, on Friday, September 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Dingeldine Music Center, located at 1417 W. Barker.  The concert is free and open to the public.

The program explores the richness of Haitian culture using live music, narration, and audio-visual presentation.  Featured composers include Werner Jaegerhuber, a German-Haitian composer of the early 20th century, and Haitian-born composers Claude Dauphin and Jean Rudy Perrault, who emigrated to Canada and the U.S., respectively. The concert will also present excerpts of the new documentary “Kenbe La” (“Hold On”) by Bel Son Productions, which explores music education in Haiti, as well as compositions by current and former teachers and students of the Holy Trinity School of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where Bradley University Professor of Music John Jost teaches in the summers.

The concert is partially funded by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a State agency.
