National biology honor society Tri Beta awarded funding to six projects submitted by Bradley’s Omega Epsilon chapter. This was the third consecutive year all Bradley proposals were funded.

Successful awards provide funds, giving students the opportunity for yearlong faculty-mentored research projects. Proposals introduce a specific research objective, relevant biological information, outlined investigative methods and a projected budget for the biological exploration.

“In the biology department, one of the best ways to engage in experiential learning is through faculty-mentored biological research,” Tri Beta faculty advisor Dr. Jennifer Jost said. “These students gain experience in experimental design, data collection, and data analysis, while engaging in biological research. The results are presented at local and regional conferences, often leading to peer reviewed publication in national journals.”

Proposals were granted to the following undergraduates for research: Tim Fernandez, Sarah Flury, partners Nicole Broden and Alyssa King assisted by Dr. Melinda Faulkner; Alexis Gazda, mentored by Dr. Keith Johnson; and Kelsie Smith, partners Emily Soltis and Sarah Keshwani whom were advised by Jost.

“Students that engage in biological research are able to work independently, think critically and analyze results,” Jost said. “Therefore, these awards provide a foundation for their future professional and biological endeavors.”

Faculty assisted the undergraduates by editing and submitting their proposals. Students will present their research findings at the Bradley Student Expo and the Tri Beta District Convention in the spring.
