Bradley University Announces 2016 Student Scholarship Expo Awards
Two hundred forty-eight undergraduate students and 76 graduate students presented a total of 187 research, scholarship, or creative production projects during the event, which was supported by 105 faculty mentors and 154 judges from Bradley and the surrounding community.

On April 12th, 13th, and 14th, Bradley University’s Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) and Center for Teaching Excellence and Learning (CTEL) hosted Bradley’s 23rd annual Student Scholarship Expo. Two hundred forty-eight undergraduate students and 76 graduate students presented a total of 187 research, scholarship, or creative production projects during the event, which was supported by 105 faculty mentors and 154 judges from Bradley and the surrounding community. In addition, 48 students received awards at the 2016 event:
Dean’s Awards
Four students in Bradley’s Foster College of Business received Dean’s Awards:
- The Undergraduate Foster College of Business Award in Quantitative Areas was awarded to Alex Bronner, Finance and Economics, and Alanna Kopp, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, and Economics for their project titled “How Cash Flows and Operating Income affect Stock Prices.” Their faculty mentor was Amit Sinha, Department of Finance and Quantitative Methods.
- The Graduate Foster College of Business Award in Quantitative Areas was awarded to Nicolas Crandall, Quantitative Finance for his project titled “Development of a New Risk Measure using Queuing Theory.” His faculty mentors were Phillip Horvath and Dr. Amit Sinha, Department of Finance and Quantitative Methods.
- The Undergraduate Foster College of Business Award in Qualitative Areas was awarded to Katie Dahlman, Biology, Organizational Communication, and Management Leadership for her project titled “Linguistic Relativity in a Global Economy.” Her faculty mentor was Larry Weinzimmer, Department of Management and Leadership.
Three students in Bradley’s Slane College of Communications and Fine Arts received Dean’s Awards:
- The Undergraduate Slane College of Communications and Fine Arts Award in Fine Arts was awarded to Allison Walsh, Studio Art, Spanish, and Philosophy for her project titled “Flesh.” Her faculty mentor was Sarah Glover, Department of Art.
- The Graduate Slane College of Communications and Fine Arts Award in Fine Arts was awarded to Jessica Bingham, Art for her project titled “Memorial to Innocence.” Her faculty mentor was Heather Brammeier, Department of Art.
- The Slane College of Communications and Fine Arts Award in Communications was awarded to Shannon Schooley, Organizational Communication for her project titled “Cultural Analysis of a Public Library.” Her faculty mentor was Elena Gabor, Department of Communications.
Eleven students in Bradley’s College of Education and Health Sciences received Dean’s Awards:
- The Undergraduate College of Education and Health Sciences Award in Education was awarded to Alexandra Vickery, Teacher Education for her project titled “Audiologic Anomalies: Causes of Hearing Loss in CHARGE Syndrome.” Her faculty mentor was Patricia Chrosniak, Department of Teacher Education.
- The Graduate College of Education and Health Sciences Award in Education was awarded to Alexandra Repke, Clinical Mental Health Counseling for her project titled “Examining the Influence of Educational Attainment on Moral Reasoning.” Her faculty mentors were Jobie Skaggs and Dr. Kathleen Buchko, Department of Leadership in Education, Nonprofits and Counseling, and Dr. Cecile Arquette, Department of Teacher Education.
- The Undergraduate College of Education and Health Sciences Award in Health Sciences was awarded to Amanda Jirka , Alexandra Ping, and Tiffany Springsteen, Health Science for their project titled “Usability of Social Spaces on a College Campus by Individuals with Limited Mobility.” Their faculty mentor was Brenda Pratt, Department of Physical Therapy and Health Sciences.
- The Graduate College of Education and Health Sciences Award in Health Sciences was awarded to Sarah Beste, Brandon Donnelly, and Dan Routh, Physical Therapy for their project titled “Determination of the Reliability of VirtuSense Technologies for the Y Balance Test.” Their faculty mentor was Steven Tippett, Department of Physical Therapy and Health Sciences.
- The Undergraduate College of Education and Health Sciences Award in Family and Consumer Sciences was awarded to Julia Kulik and Emily Foss, Dietetics for their project titled “Acute Effects of High Carbohydrate Compared to High Protein Breakfasts on Resting Energy Expenditure, Glucose Concentrations, Satiety, and Subsequent Caloric Consumption.” Their faculty mentors were Jeannette Davidson and Dr. Magdalena Sas, Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.
- The Graduate College of Education and Health Sciences Award in Family and Consumer Sciences was awarded to Alana Sims, Dietetics for her project titled “A Comparison of Body Image Disturbance in Females at Various BMIs who are At Risk for Eating Disorders.” Her faculty mentor was Magdalena Sas, Department of Family and Consumer Science.
Thirteen students in Bradley’s Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology received Dean’s Awards:
- The Undergraduate Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology Award in Civil Engineering and Construction was awarded to Ryan Ruff, Civil Engineering and Construction for his project titled “Geosynthetics in Pavement Drainage.” His faculty mentor was Imran Hossain, Department of Civil Engineering and Construction.
- The Graduate Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology Award in Civil Engineering and Construction was awarded to Manideep Tummalapudi, Civil Engineering and Construction for his project titled “Mechanical Behavior of a Pile used for Small-scale Compressed Air Energy Storage.” His faculty mentor was Sihyun Kim, Department of Civil Engineering and Construction.
- The Undergraduate Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology Award in Electrical and Computer Engineering was awarded to Timothy De Pasion, Kevin Block, Benjamin Roos, and Alexander Schmidt, Electrical Engineering for their project titled “Design of a Simulink-Based Control Workstation for Mobile Wheeled Vehicles with Variable-Velocity Differential Motor Drives.” Their faculty mentor was Gary Dempsey, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
- The Undergraduate Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology Award in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering and Technology was awarded to Tyler Kauffman, Manufacturing Engineering, Business Leadership, and Management for his project titled “Grain Refinement of Aluminum Alloy 356.” His faculty mentor was Saeed Saboury, Department of Industrial Manufacturing Engineering and Technology
- The Graduate Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology Award in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering and Technology was awarded to Rakesh Ramasamy, Industrial Engineering for his project titled “Form-Error Control and Surface Roughness Reduction in Bending-Machine Hybrid Manufacturing.” His faculty mentor was Ye Li, Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering and Technology.
- The Undergraduate Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology Award in Mechanical Engineering was awarded to Brad Zehr, Stefan Woloshyn, Ben Jones, and Zach Gibbs, Mechanical Engineering for their project titled “Design of an LCN Product Utilizing MR Fluid.” Their faculty mentors were Julie Reyer and Dr. Martin Morris, Department of Mechanical Engineering
- The Graduate Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology Award in Mechanical Engineering was awarded to Joel Aralikatti , Mechanical Engineering for his project titled “Optimization study of Compressor unit in an Air Conditioning System.” His faculty mentor was David Zietlow, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Seven students in Bradley’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences received Dean’s Awards:
- The Undergraduate College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Award in the Humanities was awarded to Colton Wojnowski, Mechanical Engineering and Religious Studies for his project titled “The Dougong: An Architectural Representation of Harmony in Chinese Culture.” His faculty mentor was Daniel Getz, Department of Religious Studies, Asian Studies Program.
- The Undergraduate College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Award in the Social Sciences was awarded to Sojourner White, Psychology and Spanish, Women’s and Gender Studies for her project titled “Bridging the Cultural Gap: Analyzing the Supportive Role of Doulas.” Her faculty mentor was Amy Scott, Departments of History and Women’s and Gender Studies.
- The Undergraduate College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Award in Mathematics and Sciences was awarded to Nicholas Luciani, Bradley Strickler , and William Peters, Computer Science, and Griffin Polonus, Mathematics and Computer Science for their project titled “Navigating through Wireless Sensor Networks.” Their faculty mentor was Yun Wang, Department of Computer Science and Information Systems.
- The Graduate College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Award in Mathematics and Sciences was awarded to Colleen Heinemann, Computer Science for her project titled “Cryptographic Algorithms on New Instructions Computer Architecture.” Her faculty mentor was Alexander Uskov, Department of Computer Science and Information Systems.
Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) Awards
Three Bradley students received Office of Sponsored Program Awards:
- The Distinguished Graduate Scholarship Prize was awarded to Taskia Ahammad Khan for her contract titled “Distributed Detection and Control of Unexpected/Emergent Behaviors in Multiagent Systems.” Her faculty mentor was Jing Wang, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
- The Undergraduate OSP Award for Multidisciplinary Integration was awarded to Abigail Craft, Hospitality Leadership and Marketing for her project titled “Investigating College Students’ Motivations and Barriers to Volunteering at Special Events.” Her faculty mentor was Kara Wolfe, Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.
- The Graduate OSP Award for Multidisciplinary Integration was awarded to Mohamed Elmakki, Mechanical Engineering for his project titled “Effect of Solution concentration on the Rate and Quantity of Epigallocatechin Gallate Absorption to Protein functionalized Surface.” His faculty mentor was Shannon Timpe, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Provost’s and President’s Awards
Seven Bradley students received Provosts’ or President’s Awards:
- The Undergraduate Provost’s Award was awarded to Genevieve Prushinski , Dietetics and Psychology for her project titled “The Freshman Fifteen: Prevalence and Predictors of Weight Gain in First-Year College Students.” Her faculty mentors were Amanda Newell, Department of Family and Consumer Sciences and Dr. Claire Etaugh, Department of Psychology.
- The Graduate Provost’s Award was awarded to Nyssa Midden, William Seiler, and Zack Shaw, Physical Therapy for her project titled “Physical Factors in an Individual with Multiple Sclerosis: A Case Study.” Her faculty mentor was Melissa Peterson, Department of Physical Therapy and Health Sciences.
- The Undergraduate President’s Award went to Chelsie Tamms, Studio Art, Graphic Design, Spanish, and Marketing for her project titled “Lettering Works: A Custom Lettering and Card Design Company.” Her faculty mentor was Margaret Young, Department of Communications
- The Graduate President’s Award was awarded to Brooke Kitts and Tiffany Marshall, Physical Therapy for their project titled “The Influence of a Home Exercise Program Including Activation of the Transverse Abdominis and Pelvic Floor Muscles While Performing Lumbar Stabilization Exercises on Chronic Low Back Pain in a Middle Aged Woman: A Case Study.” Their faculty mentors were Stacie Bertram and Dr. Breanna Reynolds, Department of Physical Therapy and Health Sciences.
