Bradley voice students recently had the opportunity to work with American soprano Kara Shay Thomson in a master class sponsored by the BU Music Department and the Peoria Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Thomson, who has sung to national acclaim with New York City Opera, Sarasota Opera, Kentucky Opera and the Cincinnati May Festival, was in Peoria for the American premiere of Illinois composer Edward Joseph Collins’ opera Daughter of the South. Music students Emily Volz, Morgan Nenne, Gregory Schamberger, Anna Pittenger, Ashlie Schlatweiler and Katie Burnham each sang a piece for Ms. Thomson and then she worked with each student in front of an audience of students and community members. Freshman, Anna Pittenger has this to say about the experience, “Ms. Thomson was very perceptive. She picked up on so many little things that I could do to improve my performance.” Sophomore, Kati Burnham said, “Working with Kara Shay Thomson was fabulous! She offered advice that was easy to implement on stage that also noticeably improved our technique/sound.”
