Time Studies: Projects that Explore Time and Photography

A New York native, Klett currently serves as Regents Professor at the Herberger Institute of Arizona State University.  Klett is the author of 13 books, and has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Buhl Foundation, the Japan/U.S. Friendship Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts.  Trained as a geologist, Klett is renown for his attention to the landscape of the American West.  Work from Klett’s Canyon Series is featured in the publication Reconstructing the View: The Grand Canyon.  This body of work was produced over five years in collaboration with artist Byron Wolfe through the process of rephotography, a technique of shooting a photograph over a span of time at the same precise location.  Using historical photographs of the Grand Canyon the artists paired their contemporary imagery with archival and created a stunning reflection on the passage of time.  The Daily Series is a newer body of work being pursued by Mark Klett that is formally related to the Canyon Series.  He considers this work as an investigation to find an alternative to the formality of digital prints as art objects by treating them like personal snapshots.  Void of preciousness, this series of snapshots is shown in large groups, edited to generate meaning through association rather than by individual, self-contained images.  A portion of these two bodies of work are featured in the exhibition Time Studies: Projects that Explore Time and Photography on display in Heuser Art Gallery.
