BUPD addresses safety alert
BUPD addresses safety alert sent on 4/13/15.

Safety is a top priority for Bradley University.
Last night’s incident would best be described as fluid and dynamic. There is a balance to disseminating accurate information and doing so in a timely manner. We follow our police procedures and work hard to distribute accurate information as quickly as possible.
Bradley Police received the call and immediately contacted Peoria Police. Within minutes several police from both departments were on scene and scouring the area for the suspects. A safety alert was written and we were prepared to send it within the hour. Fortunately, one of the two suspects was apprehended quickly which required the alert to be updated prior to distributing.
There have been questions regarding the difference between an emergency text message and an email safety alert.
- An email safety alert is a timely alert used to alert the campus community of a potentially serious or continuing threat, based on the nature and location of the incident.
- An Emergency Text Message is restricted to life threatening situations and severe weather. These messages will include direction to take an immediate action such as ‘shelter in place’ or ‘evacuation’.
Aside from the prevention tips listed below, we recommend that students always travel in groups at night or use one of the two escort services (Student Patrol or Hilltop Safety Cruiser) offered by the BUPD.
The University constantly reviews its procedures and processes, and I am happy to meet in person to discuss any concerns further.
Respectfully,
Chief Joschko
