Christopher Troutman’s drawings and paintings concentrate on the remembrance of direct observation as a vehicle for exploring the relationship between memory and pictorial expression.  Troutman draws from his experiences of living in Japan, and the changes of views when he moved to Southern California, Richmond, Kentucky, Vincennes, Indiana and now Illinois.  He uses ordinary people and their environments as subjects.  Troutman focuses on the unique gestures of human figures and amplifying urban settings.

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, and raised in Peoria, Illinois, Christopher graduated from Bradley University in 2003 with a BFA in Drawing and Painting.  He then moved to Japan where he and his wife opened a conversational English school.  In 2005 Troutman was the first foreign resident of Kagoshima to be awarded the Grand Prize at the 52nd Kagoshima Prefectural Art Exhibition and received an Award of Excellence at the 60th Southern Japan Art Exhibition. In 2008 Christopher completed an MFA in Drawing and Painting at California State University, Long Beach. Troutman formerly taught drawing and painting at Eastern Kentucky University and currently teaches at Eastern Illinois University.
