Dean Jeff Huberman Wins ArtsPartner of the Year Award

Dr. Jeffrey Huberman, dean of Slane College of Communication and Fine Arts, was awarded with the 2011 ArtsPartner of the Year Award. Huberman has been involved in the arts for over 35 years as teacher, administrator, stage director, producer and author.

“This award is designed to recognize exemplary support and service to the local arts which has ultimately resulted in a stronger and more vital cultural arts environment in the Peoria area,” said Suzette Boulais, executive director of ArtsPartners of Central Illinois, Inc.

Huberman was nominated for the award by Betty Jane Lawrence, associate dean of the Slane College of Communication and Fine Arts.

“Huberman is constantly dreaming, inspiring and guiding artists around him to take the lead in expanding their creativity,” Lawrence said in her nomination letter. Huberman took the role of dean in 1996. He promotes a progressive vision for the college with new curriculum programs such as sports communication, web and application design, game design and visual effects.

“One can add the phrase ‘networker’ to his name, for there is never a day that passes without his networking to expand the role of arts’ awareness. He is a mentor to virtually every Slane College graduate, using his extensive networking contacts in the fine arts industry,” Lawrence said.

Huberman has had a hand in bringing various lecture series to Bradley, such as the Iben Lecture in theatre arts. He has also worked to bring together the computer science and interactive media programs, as well as the Peoria Symphony Orchestra and the Department of Music.

“Individuals and organizations are considered for the award based on their outstanding efforts in the areas of advocacy, education, professional service, volunteer service, or funding of the arts,” Boulais said.

Huberman received the award during the ArtsPartners annual meeting on Oct. 5.
