Department of Art sponsors 3rd annual Inland Visual Studies Center Symposium

The 3rd Annual Inland Visual Studies Center Symposium will be held on April 12 and 13th, 2012 at Washington University in St. Louis. The Inland Center’s academic office is housed in the Art department at Bradley University and is an academic collaborative project between Washington University’s Department of Art & Design and Ohio State University’s Department of Art. It’s mission is the theorizing of art production in the central portion of the United States which includes several cultural zones that run from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico.
This year’s symposium is titled CST: Central Standard Time.
Keynote Speakers are Stephanie Smith, Director of Collections and Curator of Contemporary Art at the Smart Museum in Chicago, IL and Dr. Barbara Jaffe Professor of Art History at Northern Illinois University whose expertise lies in critical discourse surrounding the advent of modernism in the U.S.
Panelists including artists, curators and writers will be discussing the effects of monoculture in the breadth of Midwestern Criticism, the Showing of Contemporary Art and the influence of Time and Travel on the reception of Art in the region.
The Inland Center programs positively and proportionally defines the visual production of a geographic center in relation to a national and global dialogue on culture. By shining a light on this activity the center contributes to the growth of creative and intellectual capital active in inland culture.
Focusing on regional art and design histories within a collaborative educational framework contributes to a more complex national discourse on creative production and the maintenance of cultural memory. The Inland Visual Studies Center was founded at Bradley in 2008 by Paul Krainak, Chair of the Department of Art. The spring 2012 symposium will be the third symposium for the Center and the first by an Inland collaborator.
