Illinois Saxophone Quintet to give recital

The Illinois Saxophone Quintet, now in its 42nd year, will present a recital on Sunday, February 9, at 3 p.m. in Dingeldine Music Center, located at 1417 Barker Avenue. Admission is free and open to the public.

The ISQ was founded in 1972 by Keith Zimmerman, saxophone professor at Bradley University and Illinois Wesleyan, along with three music educator friends who continued to be devoted saxophonists.  The group has played in most mid-western states, France, England, Germany, and Canada.  They have been invited to play a recital at the North American Saxophone Alliance Convention in March at the University of Illinois. 

The Quintet consists of Zimmerman and four graduates of the Bradley saxophone studio – Tim Karth of Streator; Doug Stewart of Peoria; Russell Zehr of Graymont, and Corey Burns of East Peoria. It utilizes the four main voices of the saxophone family – soprano, two altos, tenor and baritone. 

The ISQ library and programs are a mix of original and transcription pieces from classical to jazz and entertainment music.  Being the world’s only professional saxophone quintet means that many transcriptions of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms and other composers’ pieces have made for a very rounded journey through music history’s periods from the Baroque to modern.  Included are pieces originally for string quintet, organ and other mediums.
