On Saturday, Dec. 3, the Bradley Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Band will perform “100th Anniversary Tribute to Stan Kenton.”
The Jazz Ensemble will perform “Artistry in Rhythm,” “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” “Cuban Fire,” “Concerto to End All Concertos,” “A Little Minor Booze,” “Send in the Clowns” and several more.
The Jazz Ensemble boasts 18 members, including senior music major Cheryl Rodey. Rodey plays trumpet and also sings.
“I started playing the trumpet in the third grade. My family is very musical and all of my siblings played instruments also,” Rodey said.
The group’s performance will also feature some guest artists.
“We will have multiple people from other bands come up and join us for the bigger tunes that have varied instrumentation,” Rodey said.
The Jazz Lab Band will perform “Funk Off,” “Birdland,” “Chameleon,” and “The Peanut Vendor.” The group’s director, Dr. Todd Kelly, said there’s something particularly special about the upcoming performance.
“They have learned all of their music by ear, without sheet music,” said Kelly, an associate professor of trumpet and music business.
The concert will feature many genres of music including swing, Latin, ballads, funk and some holiday music.
“This will be a very energetic, exciting concert,” Kelly said.
The concert will be held at Dingeldine Music Center, 1417 W. Barker Avenue, at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 3. Tickets will be available at the door and are free to students and $5.00 for the public.
