Dr. John Orfe, Assistant Professor in the Department of Music, is kicking off an action-packed September with his group Alarm Will Sound.

Alarm Will Sound, a 20-member chamber orchestra that focuses on contemporary music, has announced their September tour schedule. The group will perform two concerts at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) as part of Nonesuch Records at Brooklyn Academy of Music: Celebrating a Label Without Labels. On September 12, they will present the music of John Adams including both his Chamber Symphony as well as his Son of Chamber Symphony, his seldom-performed Scratchband and an arrangement of “Coast” from Hoodoo Zephyr done by Caleb Burhans, Alarm Will Sound’s on staff composer/multi-instrumentalist. On September 13, the ensemble performs a concert including Radio Rewrite by Steve Reich, Fly by Wire by Tyondai Braxton, and Grá agus bás by Donnacha Dennehy. They continue to promote and celebrate Nonesuch Records through-out the tour and its amazing 50-year history of releasing music “worth listening to.”

Directly after the BAM concerts, AWS heads to the renowned Sacrum Profanum festival in Krakow, Poland for the fourth consecutive year. AWS will feature music of Steve Reich including Radio Rewrite, Clapping Music and Four Genesis Settings from the opera The Cave. Dr. Orfe will have a doubly prominent role: he will perform Reich’s Piano Counterpoint for solo piano and electronics, and AWS will give the world premiere of his original 11-minute composition, Reich Rewrite, written in homage of Reich’s enduring legacy.

The tour concludes September 30 when Radio Rewrite will be released on Nonesuch Records with Electric Counterpoint performed by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. You can pre-order your copy.
