Persistence pays off for NBC Universal intern Michael Findley

At the end of the spring 2011 semester, Michael Findley’s life changed drastically. He moved to California in June to start an internship with NBC Universal, where he’s keeping very busy.

As the lone intern in the NBC.com video department, Findley is involved with the shooting, production and editing of web exclusives for the network’s primetime lineup. He has also learned the process of posting videos to the website’s content management system.

“I feel like I have a much better understanding of what goes into providing the fans of television shows with the option to view recent episodes online and give them some extra bits to view and interact with between episodes and seasons,” Findley said.

Findley followed his own initiative in getting the internship. He kept up with application due dates at several networks including Warner Brothers, ABC, CBS, USA, G4, and SyFy. At the end of the application process, he completed three phone interviews.

“I applied to all that I could and basically made sure my application and r̩sum̩ were up to date in their systems from about early January to mid-April of this year. I had some interest from other networks, but with NBC my r̩sum̩ made it through three rounds in the human resources departments,” Findley said.

Findley believes that the phone interviews are what sealed the deal for him, on top of his previous experience interning with the athletics department.

“I think the phone interviews were the part of the process where I was able to show my understanding of all things digital,” Findley said.

But what is it like to go from being a college student to working for one of the world’s biggest, and most widely known companies?

“It has been an amazing experience. I have to admit I was a bit nervous to join such a large team, but so far, everything has been an educational blast and not near as overwhelming as I imagined.”

Findley believes his NBC experience could be the gateway to a career in television.

“This internship will certainly help with acquiring future positions in the television industry, and it has already been a great experience in finding out what it’s like to work for such a large corporation and keeping up with a fast work schedule and a very sophisticated network of communication,” Findley said.
