Nicole Baker ’17 English, French, and Psychology major

Have you ever wondered how you can use your foreign language outside of the classroom?

01/27/2017 2:00 PM

Nicole Baker ’17 found two unique opportunities to use the conversation and translation skills that she learned from her French classes at Bradley University. First, Nicole was able to expand her view of the world when she tutored children in French during her mission trip to Haiti, a “life changing experience”. Through her daily interactions in French, Nicole realized how much the communication practice in class had prepared her for an immersion experience and this gave her more confidence in her own capabilities. Shortly after returning from Haiti, Nicole became a French customer service representative intern for Maui Jim in Peoria. In this position she was exposed mainly to Canadian French, so she learned about dialectal differences in vocabulary while also utilizing her translation skills. When asked how she will use French after graduation from Bradley, Nicole replied, “It opens more doors for me to be able to speak another language. You learn so much about people.”
