The Service Awards of 2017 are put into place to recognize and honor the individuals who have dedicated 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of service to Bradley. They are an elite group that is truly part of the fabric of the institution. Bradley appreciates their dedication and commitment over the years that has made the university what it is today.
At a special luncheon event, President Roberts recognized those with 40 and 45 years of service.
40 Years
Ms. Jeanne Clayton
In her 40 years of service, Jeanne Clayton has gone above and beyond for Bradley’s students, faculty and staff. Jeanne currently provides administrative support for International Studies. She intuitively understands that success depends on building genuine relationships. Her colleagues say she is one of the reasons why International Studies has such a close-knit and supportive alumni network. Simply put, alumni keep in touch with Bradley through Jeanne. Jeanne also goes above and beyond for her faculty. She has developed long-standing, good relations with offices clear across campus. She is always eager to help and to share kindness and good humor.
Dr. Philip Horvath
Dr. Philip Horvath joined Bradley University in 1977 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Business Management and Administration. He became a member of the Finance and Quantitative Methods Department in 1989 and served as its chairman from fall 1994 to summer 2013. During his tenure, he has taught almost all the advanced finance courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has published numerous papers in prestigious journals and has presented at nationally and internationally renowned academic conferences. He has published in The Journal of Finance which is universally accepted as the most prestigious journal in the field of finance. He has also published in The Journal of Retailing, the Journal of Behavioral Finance, Quantitative Finance and many other journals.
Dr. Edward Sattler
Dr. Ed Sattler has contributed on many levels to Bradley over his 40 years. He served as the Associate Dean of the Foster College of Business from 2000 to 2011 before stepping back into a full-time faculty position in economics. Dr. Sattler has been an outstanding lecturer as evident in the high demand for his Law and Economics course over the years. He’s currently working on an interesting collaborative grant with the JUMP Center examining how individual’s perceptions to medical errors and legal action stemming from those errors change after going through a low-risk medical simulation. He’s served on many university committees and currently sits on the Academic Review Board (since 1995) and the Graduate Executive Committee (since 1998).
Dean Joan Sattler
Dean Joan Sattler has been an advocate for students and faculty in the College of EHS for many years. She has served in several administrative roles including a department chairperson, associate dean and dean of EHS (which is her current role) as well as Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.
She has supported new programs and innovation, but most of all, Joan has been a visionary and a leader in professional education. She enabled the start of a physical therapy program and then mentored it from a baccalaureate to masters to doctor of physical therapy. Joan was instrumental in the initiation of graduate education in nursing – from the first programs in nursing administration in the 80s, to the family nurse practitioner programs online today. Additionally, dietetics has grown from a baccalaureate program to a master’s program with Joan’s support. New programs in hospitality, leadership in not-for-profits, online counseling, and one of the first programs in the state of Illinois with ESL endorsements in teacher education all have Joan’s mark of excellence. Bradley looks forward to Joan’s next vision.
45 Years
Dr. James Adrian
Dr. James J. Adrian has taught at Bradley since 1972. He is currently a professor in the Civil Engineering and Construction Department. His specialty is Total Quality Management for construction management and construction costs. He has authored eleven textbooks and multiple national guides, publications, courses and for the industry.
An alumnus said “All in all, I am a better construction professional because of his insights into an extremely difficult industry. His classes continually challenged me and that is the mark of a good instructor.”
Other students say he taught them to look at both sides of a problem and to question the status quo of the industry so as not to fall into the “business as usual” rut. They said many of his tests were impossible; however, they agreed the questions always made them think.
Dr. Adrian travels quite a bit to give seminars to benefit the construction industry, and while doing so, he gives exposure to Bradley and its Construction Program. A colleague said, “One of his traits is to blend real industry experience with the theoretical approach. During his seminars, even hardened construction professionals would pay strict attention to the topics. That’s how good he is.”
