This year’s Robison Lecturer is Pulitzer Prize-winning author and public speaker Taylor Branch. He has written ten novels, several of which are award winning. Branch is best known for his historical work on Martin Luther King, Jr. and civil rights.
Over the years, Branch has completed a trilogy on the life and times of Martin Luther King, Jr. The first book in the series, Parting the Waters: America in the King Years, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988, along with five other awards. The second book, Pillar of Fire: America in the King Years, was completed ten years later and won three awards. The final book of the series, At Canaan’s Edge: America in the King Years was published in 2006 by Simon & Schuster and won two awards.
The trilogy, which spans over fourteen years of time, is the result of 24 years of research and remains in demand today.
In 2009, Simon & Schuster published another of Branch’s novels, The Clinton Tapes: Wrestling History with the President. Branch was concerned with material regarding presidential history and took eight years to gather President Clinton’s legacy on tape. While working on this project, President Clinton requested that Branch secretly meet with him once a month.
Branch’s most recent book, The Cartel: Inside the Rise and Imminent Fall of the NCAA, discusses the rights of college athletes. It is currently available as an E-Book.
The Robison Lecture featuring Branch will be held on Thursday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m. at The Peplow Pavilion at the Hayden-Clark Alumni Center. A public reception will be held immediately after at The Shaheen Hall of Pride at the Hayden-Clark Alumni Center. Branch’s trilogy will be sold by the Bradley Bookstore before and after the lecture.
