Students in the Department of Communication Com103 course will experience the surrounding community and make a positive impact.

Students in the Department of Communication Com103 course will take a field trip that benefits the community at large. In an effort to encourage students to experience the surrounding community and make a positive impact, they will take part in a 1.5 hour trash pick up – but with a twist.

On October 28, more than 150 Bradley students will dress up in Halloween costumes and spend time at one of four locations in the Peoria area – Procter Center, Glendale Commons, West Main, or the Center Bluff. To start their day, they will take a 1-hour tour of the Peoria area.

While the partnership with the City of Peoria Community Development Department on the Trash or Treat event is a new initiative, the COM 103 course has always focused on civic engagement. It’s goal is to help students see the diverse and vibrant community up close, while using their communication skills to connect and make a difference.

The course director, Laura Bruns said, “If students feel connected to the larger Peoria community, they are more likely to stay here, or visit, after college and possibly continue to contribute to Bradley and Peoria.”
