“Uncle Sam and Brother Jonathan: Or Who Fought in the War of 1812” is the subject of the Armstrong Lecture at Bradley University on October 8 at 7 p.m. in the Marty Theatre in the Michel Student Center.
Dr. John Stagg, Professor of History at the University of Virginia, will give the lecture, which is free and open to the public. Stagg’s research involves preparing volumes of the papers of James Madison for publication, particularly those relating to Madison’s second administration. His research interests include the political, diplomatic, and military history of the early American republic, with special emphases on the social history of the U.S. Army, 1802-1815, and the Spanish borderlands.
The Armstrong Lecture, sponsored by the Department of History, is named for William M. Armstrong ’47, a Peoria native who attended Bradley in the 1930’s and 1940’s, interrupted by service in France and the Philippines during World War II. Armstrong received a master’s degree in history from Louisiana State University and his Ph.D. in history from Stanford University.
