Bradley Students Build Pollinator Garden

Discover how this sustainability project brought in students from across disciplines.

Students from across disciplines dig in the dirt as part of the build for Bradley's new pollinator garden.

October 1, 2025

What began as an idea in Dr. Jeanie Bukowski’s first-year LAS seminar has grown into a thriving pollinator garden at Bradley University. Designed and planted by students from a wide range of majors—including Biomedical Science, Computer Information Systems, and Mechanical Engineering—the 10 x 20-foot native plant garden serves as both a sustainability initiative and a hands-on learning opportunity, with plans to expand it to 50 feet in the future.

The project’s reach continues to grow—students recently presented their work at The Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress in Chicago and are now partnering with Education majors to develop a curriculum for elementary students, transforming the garden into an outdoor classroom.

As junior Social Work major and Sustainability minor Azariah Evans explained, “We think that having a pollinator garden is a good start to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly campus.”
