Education
Joseph Merdian holds both Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Biology from Bradley University. His graduate thesis, Spliced Leader Evolution in Hydra, integrated evolutionary biology with bioinformatics, reflecting a strong interdisciplinary approach to scientific research.
Biography
A lifelong resident of the Peoria area, he has cultivated a deep appreciation for the natural world. He is an enthusiastic outdoorsman – engaging in hiking, kayaking, camping, and exploration – and shares his passion for science and nature with his wife and four children.
Teaching
He emphasizes active learning through dynamic classroom experiences. His courses incorporate multimedia content, live demonstrations, and guided discussions to make scientific concepts accessible and personally meaningful to students. His approach aims to inspire a lasting interest in biology. He currently teaches Biology 101 – Diseases of Life.
Scholarship
In 2023, he was honored with the “Faculty Who Make a Difference” award at Illinois Central College, recognizing his outstanding contributions to teaching and student engagement.
Professional Experience
Since 2017, he has been teaching biology at the collegiate level in the Peoria region. At Illinois Central College, he instructs a range of courses including introductory biology, ecology, and environmental science. His teaching philosophy centers on fostering interactive and engaging learning environments that encourage student participation and curiosity.
Service
He is actively involved in ecological restoration efforts at local nature sites, contributing to invasive species management and conducting controlled prairie burns. He also serves as captain of a local volunteer fire department, where he fulfills duties as a firefighter and state-licensed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
