Biography

Professor Horn graduated from Bradley University in 2016 with her BSN. She worked at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in the emergency department for six years before working at OSF Life Flight for three years after that. She then came back to the ER as a clinical resource team staff member, traveling to several different ERs in the region. During that time, she received her MSN in population health from Southern New Hampshire University. Professor Horn taught an ICU clinical as an affiliate faculty member last semester and really loved it! She has enjoyed every single aspect of critical care, learning so much about patient care, responsibility, and emergency responsiveness. She has truly enjoyed teaching and precepting throughout her career, and she hopes to bring that to the university at the student level as the new simulation coordinator.

Teaching

Though Professor Horn has not taught in the classroom, she has taught and precepted several new nurses throughout her career. She also taught a clinical in the ICU as an adjunct faculty last semester. Throughout all aspects of teaching, she really enjoys seeing students or new nurses grasp onto a new concept and truly be able to practice that concept in real life. Nursing is an incredibly demanding and stressful career, and helping nurses learn tasks, deal with their own needs and emotions, along with other others’ needs and emotions is very important to her. Nurses do incredible work, and sometimes see families and patients on their worst days, making this career a fulfilling and humbling one. This is how Professor Horn feels about being a nurse, and she hopes that she can transfer this feeling, as well as her knowledge and experience to others. Working as a simulation coordinator for nursing students is so exciting, and she hopes that she can create experiences that are worthwhile while also extending knowledge for all.

Scholarship

Topics of interest/presentations: pediatric simulations, rural health presentation, ventilator management, critical care, various case studies from Life Flight patient care.

She has completed, participated in, and created several simulation scenarios in her career, both as an ER nurse and at OSF Life Flight. Simulation is an amazing experience for all involved, that provides a safe space to practice real patient care without any risk. Simulation experiences can enhance real care, while also making new nurses and students comfortable with making mistakes and talking to each other. These are the large barriers that are hard to hurdle in real life, so starting this in simulation is an amazing opportunity for students!
