This non-credit course is designed for students and scholars located anywhere in the world who want to learn about autoethnography, a qualitative research method that merges the practices of life writing with the practices of ethnography.

Since 2023, dozens of students, teachers, therapists, independent scholars, and professors of all ranks have taken the course. Learners have come from various disciplines including counseling, education, healthcare, communication, theology, sociology, human resources, and psychology, and from several regions including South Africa, China, Israel, the United States, Canada, Denmark, Greece, and New Zealand.

What You’ll Learn

Learners will have the tools to describe and analyze personal experiences and connect them to cultural discourses, meanings, and practices.

Upon successful completion of this program, learners will be able to:

  • Determine what Autoethnography is and when/how/why it should be used.
  • Effectively utilize an autoethnographic approach for qualitative research.
  • Describe the kinds of (personal) experiences that make for good autoethnography.
  • Identify ethical issues of doing and writing autoethnography.

Throughout the course, you’ll benefit from expert instruction from Dr. Tony Adams, a Caterpillar Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at Bradley University. As the founding co-editor of the Journal of Autoethnography (University of California Press), Dr. Adams has prioritized building the interdisciplinary and international infrastructure for autoethnography. He is also a co-editor of Writing Lives: Ethnographic Narratives book series (Routledge).
