Biography
Dr. Jean E. Jost joined Bradley University in 1989 after teaching at Virginia Commonwealth University, College of Mount St. Joseph in Ohio, and Millikin University in Illinois. She is a volunteer at Re-Store, Habitat for Humanity, in Peoria.
Teaching
Dr. Jost is a Medievalist who specializes in Chaucerian and Arthurian Studies and Medieval Romances. In the English Major courses, she teaches the Survey of Early British Literature, Medieval English Literature, including such special topics as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Malory’s Morte Darthur, Medieval Romances, Love and War in the Middle Ages, and Chaucer. In the General Education Program she teaches Women’s Literature, Argumentative Writing: Ethics and Politics, and Introduction to Literature, as well as numerous Independent Studies.
Scholarship
Dr. Jost has published two books, “Ten Middle English Romances: A Reference Guide” and “Chaucer’s Humor: Critical Studies,” as well as scores of articles on Childhood in the Middle Ages, Urban Space, Crime and Punishment in the Middle Ages, Elements of Space in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and the Old French Fabliaux among others. She has now branched out to Manuscript Studies and is working on a critical edition of The Pricke of Conscience. She also has another book in progress, “Trouthe is the hyeste thyng:” Behests and their Breaking in the Canterbury Tales.
Dr. Jost has won four National Endowment for the Humanities Grants, the last being on “The Relationship Between Christians and Jews” in Oxford in 2010. She is also the recipient of the Rothberg Award for Research Excellence in 2010.
Service
Dr. Jost has been the faculty representative for Student Senate, was an advisor to Habitat for Humanity and Common Ground. She has been treasurer for Phi Kappa Phi, Chair of the University Faculty Grievance Committee and member of the Women’s Studies Committee. She has been on numerous other committees, including Curriculum review for Undergraduate Studies in English and Revision of the Student Evaluation Form in English.
