Biography

Grew up in eastern Washington and Oregon. Married, two children, two grandchildren.

Teaching

Courses recently taught include Unified Composition and Western Civilization, Technical Writing, Research Writing, various topics in 19^th Century American Literature,  19^th Century Russian Literature, Fiction and Film, and Gothic Fiction and Film.  Following are some of the highlights of my work on course innovation and development over the years: 

• Member, General Education Implementation Committee (1983-86) and University General         Education Committee (1997-1999).
•  Study Abroad: Developed and taught the first travel writing course for January Interim in London (1997).  Subsequently, have taught the course frequently in London, and also during the summer in Malta and Austria. Also taught London-based course in British Literature in the summer of 1986.  
• Developed and initially taught English 506 (Writing in the Professions).   
• Member of team designing and initially teaching Western Civilization course.  
• With Professor Philip Jones (History), developed and taught pilot version of Unified Composition and Western Civilization (CIV 111-112). I’ve taught these courses for over twenty years, in partnership with a total of six colleagues.
• Developed and taught graduate course for Master of Liberal Studies program (MLS 624 North American Frontier in Literature).
• Participated in nine national or regional conferences on pedagogy and course development.

Scholarship

Grants:

• Director, “Reinterpretations of American Literature.” Summer Institutes for high school teachers. Funded by the National Endowment of the Humanities. 1983-1984, $45,336; 1984-1986, $145,945.
• Assistant Director, “Integration of Freshman Composition and Western Civilization.”  Seminar for Bradley faculty funded by the National Endowment of the Humanities (1990-1992).
