Medical Laboratory Science
The Medical Laboratory Science program equips you with the scientific foundation and hands-on experience needed for a career in hospital, forensic, environmental, industrial, and research labs. You’ll gain expertise in lab procedures, state-of-the-art equipment, and real-world clinical settings through a senior-year hospital practicum.
With mentorship from faculty and networking opportunities through professional organizations, you’ll be prepared to take national certification exams and pursue careers in health care, public health, government, or further studies in medical or graduate school.
Experiential Learning
As a medical laboratory science major, you’ll gain hands-on experience in lab procedures, particularly those used in hospital settings. Your learning journey includes:
- State-of-the-Art Lab Training – Work closely with faculty mentors and advanced lab equipment.
- Senior Hospital Lab Practicum – Complete a 10-month, NAACLS-accredited clinical practicum in hospital labs in suburban Chicago and Peoria.
- Professional Development – Network through organizations like Alpha Epsilon Delta, BUMed Club, Health Science Organization, Global Medical Training, and the Student Health Advisory Committee.
- Career Preparation – Develop the skills needed for hospital clinical labs, public health organizations, and government roles, or pursue graduate or medical school.
